Interesting Insight.

Today in my blogging class we had a guest speaker Dave Rhea (follow him) and he discussed a whole slur of things.  For example, he was in a band, went to University of Florida, did some interesting videos for SBTV and now is working for The Journal Record

The most important thing that I got from the whole class was his advice to us as students for our future careers.

"Love learning."

Yes, I am aware that it is only two words and very simple.  It's also very applicable though.  A lot of people think that once they have a career that things are set in stone.  That is far from the truth if you plan on being in Public Relations, Broadcasting, Advertising, Journalism or anything else involving the media.

Media is changing and you have to embrace it or choose another career field.  Blunt but true.

Book Nerd.

This year my New Year's resolution was to read all of Nicholas Sparks' books.  I had already read 4 but I decided that I wanted to start reading more for pleasure.  As of last night I am on book 9.  I find reading to be very soothing and a small escape from the everyday stresses of life.

Anyways.

My favorite book so far of his has to be True Believer or The Lucky One.  I like them both for two totally different reason.  True Believer was great because the main character was a Journalist and found his passion after finding his soul mate. (cheesy I know) The Lucky One is about a Marine that finds a picture of a woman while in Iraq and she becomes his good luck charm.  After his tour is finished he sets out to find her and does.  I like that one because one of my best friends is a Marine and it was interesting to think that men in the military might actually have good luck charms.

After staying up for the past couple nights just to read I discover two things.
1. I am a book nerd.
2. I am all right with it.

Have you all read any good books lately?

Way Back Wednesday.

I'm gonna start posting older pics of myself and whoever I decide upon every Wednesday.

Enjoy! This is a pic of me and my cousins (Amanda and Jeremy).  I was about 8 years old.

Loss

February 15 at around 8:30 p.m. my Great Aunt Maxine passed away at 55 years old.  She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis over 12 years ago and fought every day after that.  The past 8 years or so she has slowly lost who she was.  By the end she wasn't able to walk and barely able to function most of her body.

She was strong throughout the whole disease though.  Every time anyone visited her she had a huge smile on her face and wanted to hear about what was going on in your life.  Now that I think about it I never once heard from any of my family say that she complained.  I know that if it were me I probably would have been complaining a lot.

On Sunday,  my Mema called me and told me that my aunt had taken a turn for the worse and asked if someone could come get my little brother.  She needed to go to the hospital to see her sister.  I couldn't blame her at all so even though I had plans I knew that I had to delay them.  I decided that after the wedding reception I was about to go to that I was going to suck it up and go see my aunt.  I had put off seeing her because I wanted to remember her the way I saw her last.  She was talking and telling jokes.  At this point she was sleeping and did until she passed.  I knew I wanted to say goodbye and didn't know what to expect.  I will never get the image out of my mind but I will also never forget the good memories of her either.

Wednesday the doctors told us that she had 24 hours left.  I went with my Mema (even though she had basically lived there since Sunday) to be her support to see my aunt for the last time.  It was hard but I am glad that I got to say goodbye to such a strong woman.

The funeral is Monday or Tuesday but I like to think of it as a celebration of her life and not the mourning of her death.

Grammy's

The Grammy's were pretty interesting this year to say the least.  There were interesting performances and not the prettiest fashion statements.

The Red Carpet is always my favorite.  I love seeing the good, the bad and definitely the ugly.

My favorite dress of the night was Carrie Underwood's it was simple, elegant and I loved the low back with the strap to add dimension.  I had to show how scrumptious Blake Shelton looked as well. :)

The least favorite attire for me was from Bonnie McKee.  She isn't well known but I fell in love with one of her songs a few years back so seeing her in this outfit was disappointing. Yes, those are tassels that look like long armpit hair.  I also couldn't help but notice how high the slit was on Adam Levine's gf, Anne Vyalitsyna.  I don't care if you are a Victoria's Secret model put some clothes on and be classy not trashy for an awards ceremony!

A lot of the performers did really well on Sunday with a couple exceptions. My favorite of the night was Katy Perry's ET/Part of Me.  It was obviously directed towards her recent split from Russell Brand and that made me smile.  I feel like it was time for her to speak out about it and to do it musically is the best way.  Also, releasing it at the Grammy's was the best move she could've made in my opinion! (Blue hair maybe not the most appealing decision.)  The worst performance was way easier to pick for me.  Nicki Minaj.  She's always been a bit strange but this was pushing the limits.  It blew my mind in a bad way.  Even the look on her face makes her look crazy! ;)

Since it's Valentine's Day, I guess I'll post what I got from my Valentine.  He left for Georgia for 3 weeks a little over a week ago. (Air Force) He sent me white chocolate covered strawberries, such a sweetheart, I know!

Guest Speaker

Today in Blogging for Journalist we had a guest speaker, Kurt Hochenauer.  He is the writer of a liberal blog called Okie Funk.

I found it really interesting to hear about the beginning of his blog, how often he post and about some of the back lash he has encountered.

I like knowing that he post honestly and doesn't mind hearing what others have to say/complain about his opinion.  A lot of people write about the things that are driven by anger but his tend to be honest and not just a rand about what is going on.  It is refreshing to read intelligent opinion about our government.

Knowing that Doc Hoc does not include ads because he does it out of enjoyment instead of for money is great to hear. He also spoke about how tags are a good thing and actually showed us the impact they can make as well.

All in all it was very informative!

Celebrating getting older.

Over the weekend I helped a dear friend celebrate turning 21.

We started out eating dinner at Red Pin.  I ordered a build your own: pepperoni and black olive pizza.  It was delicious but I wish that the waiter would have told me that it was enough for 2.  Afterwards we bowled for an hour.  I looked pretty stylish in my skirt with bowling shoes. Ok, maybe not but it's about having fun not matching!

Rokbar was our next adventure while downtown.  None of us had ever been there but it was free so we decided to check it out.  It was full of men so we decided to not stick around for that long.  Being stared at like a piece of meat is not our cup of tea. :)

Eventually we ended up at City Walk, where a few of my friends work.  It was very entertaining to say the least.  I saw a lot of people that I knew resulting in birthday drinks for Brittany!  All in all it was a great night for everyone.

I read this in class today and figured I would share something inspiring as well.

Songs are the best.

Almost every song I hear reminds me of someone I know.  That can be a good thing or bad depending on the day.

I was listening to Jake FM and this song struck me.  As I get older it becomes more apparent who my true friends are.  They may not be perfect but I know that they have my back.  They are the ones that call or text just to say hello and not because they need something.  I think we all have those "friends" and you are probably thinking of which ones those are right now.  I apologize but I say love them anyway.
